ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is required
for the entry to the United States

ESTA (the Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is a mandatory system required by the Department of Homeland Security since January 12, 2009 for all foreign visitors traveling to the United States without visas. Visitors must apply prior to departure . Travelers visiting the U.S. (including Hawaii) on a short-term basis of no longer than 90 days (including those changing flights for other destinations) for business or sightseeing purposes are exempt from the need to obtain a visa from a U.S. embassy but must apply online for authorization in advance. ESTA is the system for providing such prior authorization. However, those who already have obtained a visa issued by a U.S. embassy do not need to apply for ESTA if they will use that visa to enter the U.S. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security recommends that travelers apply for ESTA travel authorization to the U.S. at least 72 hours prior to entry so they would be able to receive it on time.

ESTA authorization

ESTA authorization ESTA is an electronic authorization system that makes it possible for travelers to enter the U.S. without visas for short-term travel to the U.S. either for business or sightseeing purposes by travelers who do not need visas. You do not need to complete the ESTA authorization procedures if traveling to the U.S. on a valid visa issued by a U.S. embassy. Normally, a visa is required for travel to the United States. However, those travelers who are citizens of countries participating in the visa waiver program are exempted from visa application procedures and may travel to the U.S. using the simplified ESTA authorization system if they satisfy certain conditions regarding matters such as their purpose of travel and length of stay. This site provides a service through which we apply for ESTA for you, as well as easy-to-understand information about obtaining ESTA authorization. You also may apply for ESTA yourself. If applying yourself, see the official U.S. Customs and Border Protection website. ESTA is a travel certification system valid for tourism or business within 90 days. Those who travel to the United States for stays longer than 90 days, business with compensation, studying abroad, etc. must obtain a visa.

When a visa is needed

When a visa is needed Note that ESTA authorization may be refused in cases of travel such as the following: When the traveler has certain communicable diseases or a mental disorder; when the traveler has been convicted of unlawful or immoral acts, violation of restrictions on drugs, etc.; when the traveler has overstayed a visit to the U.S. under ESTA authorization in the past; and when the traveler is, or has been in the past, involved in espionage, subversion, terrorism, or genocide. However, even when ESTA authorization has been refused, in some cases the traveler may be able to travel to the U.S. by obtaining a visa. If attempting to enter the U.S. without a visa issued by the U.S. State Department or a U.S. embassy, you may be refused entry. Contact a U.S. embassy or consulate concerning how to apply for and receive a visa. ESTA can be acquired relatively quickly but many visas are required to be submitted, and it is expected that it will take more than a month to obtain a visa. If you wish to obtain a visa, an interview will be conducted at the nearest US embassy or consulate. If you need a visa for a long-term stay or study abroad, please proceed as soon as possible.

Applying for ESTA

Applying for ESTA The ESTA application process is quicker than that for a visa, making it very convenient for short-term visits to the U.S. This site provides a service through which we complete the ESTA application procedures on your behalf. U.S. Customs and Border Protection and airlines strongly recommend applying at least three days prior to the date of travel. Usually, you will be notified of whether or not your authorization to enter the U.S. has been granted within 72 hours after you apply, but in certain cases, such as during large-scale system maintenance, it may take longer than three days. Also, in some cases authorization may be assigned pending status during the screening process. U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which oversees ESTA, has implemented various measures to prevent downtime on its website, which is visited by large numbers of people from around the world every day. However, if for any reasons you are unable to obtain ESTA authorization by your travel date, you might not be allowed to board your flight. For this reason, we recommend applying for ESTA as soon as possible after you have decided on your travel itinerary.

ESTA renewal and reapplication

ESTA renewal and reapplication ESTA authorization is valid for up to two years, not to exceed the expiration date of the passport used. Since ESTA authorization no longer will be valid after two years, you will need to apply for ESTA again if you want to visit the U.S. again without a visa. Since ESTA is a permit required to visit the U.S., it differs in nature from identification documents such as a license or a visa issued by an embassy. While you may renew expired identification documents using the same number and other information registered when you first obtained them, each time an ESTA expires you will need to apply for a new one. Those who plan to travel to the U.S. without a visa again in the future or those who travel to the U.S. frequently should be sure to check their ESTA expiration dates and reapply for ESTA in accordance with their travel plans. Also note that if your passport will expire within the next two years, your ESTA will expire on the same date that your passport expires.
