Guide to filling out the ESTA application
Examples of filling out the ESTA application are provided below.
Before starting to fill out the form, make sure you have your passport and credit card at hand.
- Necessary for ESTA application
Please prepare the following two items for ESTA application.
- Passport (with valid expiration date and IC chip)
- Credit card (it does not need to be the name of the applicant)
A passport and credit card are required for ESTA application. Please enter the passport information of the person applying for ESTA. Even if a minor is applying for an ESTA application, it is necessary to enter the passport information of the minor rather than the parent. Make sure your passport is valid and has an IC chip that can be read by airport terminals.
You can use VISA, MasterCard, JCB, Diners, AMERICAN EXPRESS, and pay with a Paypal account. If the ESTA applicant does not have a credit card, you can also pay with a credit card other than the applicant.
01.Start the application process

Click on “Apply for ESTA here” to begin the application process.
02.Enter applicant information
For the first name and last name, enter the same notation as in the passport in capital letters.
This item is very important information for ESTA application. Please be careful not to put a wrong name or spelling in the item for entering your first and last name.
If you have an alias, check “I have an alias” and enter your name.
03.Enter your contact information
Pay special attention to incorrect email addresses.
After completing the application, we will send you an application reception E-mail, travel authorization approval E-mail, etc. to the E-mail address you entered.
Please note that if you use a free mail or your mobile device’s mail address, it may be sorted into a spam mail folder or may not be received.
04.Enter your home address
Enter all addresses in English or Roman characters.
Please enter the address where the applicant currently resides, not the permanent address of the family register.
05.Enter the information from your
Passport information is the most important information for ESTA applications. Please make sure that the input information is correct.
Please be careful about the wrong choice of issue date and expiration date.
06.Answer if you have ever been issued a passport or national identity card for travel by any other country.
If you have been issued a passport or national identity card for travel by any country other than the one indicated “Country of Citizenship” under the applicant information, select “Yes” and enter the issuing country, document type, document number, and expiration date.
If you have forgotten your ID number or expiration date, or if you do not know it, you can select “UNKNOWN” for both items.
07.Enter your country of birth and city
If you are unsure which city you were born in, you may leave “City of Birth” blank.
08.Answer the question on citizenship/nationality
If you currently have a nationality / citizen other than your nationality, please select “Yes” and answer your nationality and history of acquisition (by birth / through parents / naturalization / others).
If you have a nationality or citizenship other than your nationality in the past, please select “Yes” and answer only the nationality.
09.Answer about CBP GE members
If you are a member of the GBP Global Entry Program, select “Yes” and enter your 9-digit GE membership number. If you are not a member or do not know, please select “No”.

Select “Yes” if you are connecting in the US, and select “No” if you are staying in the United States.
If you select “No”, the message “Do you want to register your address and phone number?” Is displayed. If you know the details of your stay, please select “Yes” and fill in the name, address and phone number of your stay. If you have any questions, you can leave it blank.
Select “No” if you do not know the details, such as when you have not yet decided where to stay.
11.Answer about working experience
Select “Yes” if you have work experience in the past or in the past. Please answer either employment status or employer name (workplace). Enter the employer’s address, phone number, and job title within the range that you understand. If you don’t know, you can leave it blank. You can also enter past employer information.
Select “No” if you do not have work experience.
In the United States, as part of measures for illegal employment by migrants from overseas, we recommend disclosing work information for those who travel to the United States. Please understand that disclosing your work information is related to proving that you are not willing to relocate to the United States and that you will return to your country promptly.
12.Answer about SNS account
If you want to register an SNS account that you are using now or in the past, select “Yes” and enter the name of the SNS you are using and the account name within the SNS.
If you do not use SNS or do not wish to register, select “No”.
13.Enter the emergency contact
Select “Yes” to register emergency contact information.
Enter information about family members, friends, and work locations that can be contacted in an emergency.
14.Enter your parents’ names
Enter your parents’ names in Roman alphabet capital letters.
You may leave one or more of these spaces blank if you do not know the name(s) of one or both of your parents. You may enter the name(s) of your biological parents, adoptive parents, step-parents, or guardians.
Read all nine questions carefully and answer “Yes” or “No.”
There is a very high likelihood that your ESTA travel authorization will be refused if you answer “Yes” to even one of these questions.
If your ESTA is refused, you will need to obtain a nonimmigrant visa from the U.S. embassy. Be sure to read the questions carefully before you answer them.
16.Consent to ESTA application
Read both of the consent statements closely and check the boxes if there are no errors in the content of your application.
After checking the consent items, click on “Check Information Before Sending” below.
17.Check Application Information page
On this page, double-check the application information you have entered to make sure that there are no typos or mistakes, and if the information is correct, click on “Send Above Information“.
Pay close attention especially when checking your name, passport number, and date of birth for any errors. This completes your entry of information to the ESTA application.
18.Payment of the application fee
You can pay with a Visa, Master Card, JCB, American Express, Diners Club credit card or PayPal.
If the applicant does not have a credit card, or if the representative pays, you can also pay with a credit card other than the applicant.
You will be charged the application fee of 7,236 JPY (including tax), which includes the application fee of $14 charged by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Your entry procedures are complete when the message “Application and screening in process” appears.
20.ESTA application receipt Email
The ESTA application receipt Email will be sent to the email address you registered during the application process.
Note that it may take up to 72 hours to complete the application and screening process.
Also make sure to avoid the receipt Email being sorted to the SPAM file when using a webmail or mobile Email address.
21.Notification of travel authorization
Your ESTA application is complete when you receive the notification of travel authorization at the Email address you registered.
We recommend that you save the ESTA authorization information (application number and expiration date) shown in the email as a receipt for the information received from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Your current address must also be entered in your passport. If the address on your passport has changed due to relocation or moving, please draw a ruled line on the old address and enter your current address in your passport.
Your passport is an important proof of your nationality and identity, especially when you travel abroad. When you obtain an ESTA, it is recommended that you write your ESTA number on your passport.
- You can check the progress
Upon completion of ESTA application, the application ID (33-digit alphanumeric characters) will be sent by E-mail.
